It’s event month here at IASI – we’re looking forward to meeting and reconnecting with as many of our members as possible at the three events we’ve got lined up in October.
Our stand is upstairs on the gallery near the main stairs, look out for the Irish flag we’ll be flying
We’re speaking (on a panel with BASI and Snowsports England) in the Equipment & Instruction theatre on Saturday at 4.30pm
We’ll be running a series of ‘Fireside Chats’ at our stand with some of our LCPs – if you’re at the show, check out our stand to see what’s on when – and have a tea or coffee on us while you’re there
Three members of the board will be manning the stand – come and say hi to Dáire, Rich and Blue
If you’d like to book in a more detailed chat with IASI Chair Dáire, drop him an email to agree a time during the show – or come and join the team at the local Irish pub Biddy Mulligans after the show closes on Saturday
Last reminder of our competition to win FREE tickets to the show – anyone who follows any of our social pages, and likes and comments on a post before midnight on 14th October will be entered into the draw to win a free ticket to the show. Good luck!
The official Notice of AGM went out last week – if you didn’t receive it, click here to read it
Please take the time to read the revised Articles of Association and the Members’ Charter – together they are the most significant update to our governance for years, and the Board would welcome any comments before the AGM
Look out for the list of nominees for the Board election, which will be sent round to all members this week
If you’re attending the AGM in person, please let us know so we can cater appropriately
Don’t forget, we’re running a series of clinics (general skills and bumps) during the day – if you’d like to join one, or just go for a free ski, please sign up here
If you can’t attend the AGM in person, we strongly encourage you to attend via Zoom, or vote by proxy using this form
If you have any questions at all about the AGM, please contact Fiona Mullen, IASI’s Company Secretary
The Members’ Weekend in Cervinia is going to be awesome – there’s a great crowd of current and potential IASI members signed up for a weekend of early season skiing, free training, CPD, first aid and fun. Come and join us! For more info, or to sign up, please contact IASI Admin.
Last month I travelled to Kilternan alongside our Head of Education Mikey Edwards to run a weekend of training for the members and educators based in Ireland.
Unlike a lot of my peers and colleagues, I had never set boot onto plastic before. A bit nervous of what I was letting myself in for I confided in Mikey, who raced dryslope a lot in his youth, winning a few championships. “You’ll be fine, just go and have fun”, which was a lot more reassuring than fellow educator Rob Machon “it’s like skiing on ice, but really slowly” 🙂
And great fun it was too. The first few runs weren’t pretty, (or parallel!), but as I started to adjust to the surface, I began to appreciate the precision required to edge and balance through the turn. It’s an unforgiving surface, the sweet spot is much smaller than on a groomed piste, and it can definitely help with training accuracy.
The first day we had IASI members from the Ski Club of Ireland join me and Mikey for a morning session covering the IASI Basic Principles and an afternoon session focused on personal performance with video analysis. The enthusiasm and love of skiing at Kilternan is evident everywhere, the slope busy with kids groups, race training and our IASI instructors all embodying the association’s ‘Learn it, Love it, Live it’ ethos perfectly. And Kilternan is a great facility, with a steeper section as the top, separate beginner area, and dedicated bumps run.
Day 2 was a CPD for the Irish based educators. We started the morning going through some L1 exam content, collaborating on different approaches to our technical concepts. We also had the opportunity to go onto the newly installed moguls section of the slope and run through some tactics. I was really impressed with the moguls, having the consistent surface, gradient and quick lap time makes for a very intuitive teaching environment. In the afternoon we covered the PEAR model and some teaching scenarios and then finished the day with a fun group analysis.
It was a pleasure to ski with the Irish based educators, many of whom I had never met before, but all of whom share the same infectious passion for teaching.
The weekend was a brilliant reminder of how strong and connected our community is, no matter the surface beneath our skis.
The Board has been working on defining and shaping IASI’s future direction, and developing a plan for how to get there. Thank you so much to the LCP owners, Educators and Members who contributed to the project by volunteering their time to be interviewed. The insights they shared have been critical to the success of the project.
Look out for a dedicated email in the next week or so – we’re really excited about where we’ve got to and very motivated to make it happen. When you read it, we hope you will be too!
Our range now includes new items, casual wear and women-specific styles.
